Back at Longbourn, Elizabeth had become more upset about making such a fuss about the announcement in The Times of Mr. Darcy’s engagement. She knew there was more to it but the news came at her suddenly, like a blow to her stomach and she felt it acutely. The letter from Mary did not indicate that anything was amiss and Mary had even asked her to confirm that she and Darcy were courting, but that was before The Times story. Elizabeth anxiously awaited Mary’s next letter but that would likely be carried back with her father when he returned from town. She did not know what to think and the angst of not knowing the truth filled her full of self doubt. Had she also brought all of this on her family? Her father rarely went to town and he did not have to this time, but his favourite daughter’s tears and angst had driven him to such a state that he would suffer the journey to be rid of the whole lot of his daughters’ questions. Only Mrs. Bennet took the news calmly and did not believe Mr. Darcy was engaged to his cousin. This was totally different than anyone who knew the family would believe as Mr. Bennet had seemed to trade places with his wife in their countenance or perhaps this was the father’s duty alone.
